Northern Lights in Tromsø and Spitsbergen

Experience the wonders of the Arctic: Everlasting darkness, the bright light of the stars and the moon in the midst of solitude covered in snow and - with a bit of luck - marvellous northern lights on an exceptional journey that's going to let you intensely experience Tromsø and the northernmost town of the world Longyearbyen.

Tour Plan

Per scheduled flight from the airport of your choice (SAS connection is required) to Tromsø. Here, you will be welcomed at the airport including a transfer to your hotel.

To start the day, there is going to be a guided tour where you get to know the city that is known as "Paris of the North". In the afternoon we will depart for our first Arctic adventure - a dog sledding trip. Enjoy the view of the landscape and the silence surrounding us while we glide through a winter wonderland on the sleds.

An eventful day and another Arctic adventure lie ahead of us. After breakfast we go on board one of the Whale Watching boats that takes us out into the fjords. Between November and February humpback whales and killer whales splash about in the waters and the chances are good to witness these peaceful giants of the oceans.

After the tour, there is room for an extensive lunch break. You are doing well to use this time because we will start our hunt for the Northern Lights at around 7.30 pm after dinner. With a minivan, we are flexible so our guide chooses the best spots to marvel at the northern lights and take photographs.

After a relaxed breakfast we have some free time to use for ourselves. Transfer to the airport at 10 am and departure at 12.20pm.

Welcome to Longyearbyen! From November to January we have polar night. Only the moon and stars light the snow-covered landscape. Here you have the chance to witness the northern lights during daytime as well, thanks to the everlasting darkness. Europe's northernmost archipelago is home to more polar bears than humans. Reindeer and Arctic foxes roam the snowy landscape and snowmobiles, ski and snowshoes are the favored means of transportation. Nevertheless, Longyearbyen is a vivid town with an international flair. The airport secures a secure and comfortable connection and the touristic focal point of the settlement doesn't lack anything. After our arrival in Longyearbyen we move into our hotel rooms and learn about the diversity of the northernmost town in the world on a guided tour. You can feel the atmosphere of the place, discover the treasures of the local museum(s) and art gallery, take a deep breath of the clear arctic air and enjoy the peace and comfort of the everlasting darkness.

In the evening there is a local guide and van available to you. This way we are flexible to leave the settlement as soon as there are any signs for northern lights to get a better view of the dancing lights in the night sky.

Today we leave the busy town behind and explore a piece of the Arctic by snowmobile in complete darkness, only with moonlight and the stars in the sky. In the middle of the day!

We start after breakfast. We are equipped with Arctic thermosuits, boots, mittens and other gear so that we can start our trip after a detailed instruction on the snowmobile. Depending on the weather and snow, we drive far out into nature to watch the northern lights above the lights of Longyearbyen from the distance up on a hill. After lunch and hot drinks out in nature we come back to town.

In order to drive a snowmobile, you need to have a driver's license class B.

Our highlight today is a snowshoe hike up on a glacier close to the town of Longyearbyen. Out guide decides on a daily basis, depending on snow and weather, which route to take. If the conditions allow, we visit an ice cave along the way and dive into a bizarre world of ice and sparkling crystals in the heart of the glacier. Back on the surface, we enjoy the view on Longyearbyen with hot drinks and a small lunch before slowly heading back to town.

It's time to say goodbye. After breakfast there might be some time to use around town. Afterward, transfer to the airport and scheduled flight to Oslo. Here, you stay in a comfortable hotel directly by the airport.

Enjoy your delicious breakfast buffet at the hotel before taking your individual flights back home with many new impressions and memories on board.
